Tribute
This section is dedicated to those killed, abducted, imprisoned, or threatened here in Sri Lanka for speaking the truth or expressing perspectives that certain parties did not want expressed.
Killed
Lasantha Wickrematunge: editor of the Sunday Leader, a weekly English-language paper, characterized by its strong sense of independence and investigative journalism. Assassinated January 8th 2009. See his last editorial here: And Then They Came for Me.
Rajani Thiranagama: academic, human rights activist, co-author of The Broken Palmyrah. Gunned down by LTTE September 21st, 1989.
Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam: scholar, activist, politician, peacemaker, founder of International Centre for Ethnic Studies, founder of Law and Society Trust. Assassinated July 29th, 1999.
Taraki Sivaram: journalist, senior editor of TamilNet, abducted, assaulted, and killed April 28th, 2005.
Kethesh Loganathan: human rights activist, political activist, co-founder of the Center for Policy Alternatives. Assassinated August 12th, 2006.
Subramanium Sukirtharajah: journalist for Tamil newspaper Sudar Oli. Killed in Trincomalee, January 24, 2007.
Subash Chandrabose: editor, Nilam. Killed in Vavuniya, April 16, 2007.
Suresh Kumar: journalist for Tamil newspaper Uthayan. Killed in Jaffna, May 3, 2007.
Ranjith Kumar: journalist for Tamil newspaper Uthayan. Killed in Jaffna, May 3, 2007.
Sampath Lakmal de Silva: freelance press and television journalist. Abducted from Boralesgamuwa and found dead in Dehiwela July 2, 2006.
Mariathus Manojanraj: newspaper seller on his way to Jaffna. Killed by a mine explosion August 1, 2007.
Sathasivam Baskaran: distributor for Tamil newspaper Uthayan. Shot dead in Jaffna on August 16, 2007.
Sinnathamby Sivamaharajah: managing director of Tamil newspaper Namadu Eelanadu. Killed in Jaffna August 21, 2007.
P. Devakumar: television Jaffna correspondent for networks MTV, Sirasa, and Shakthi . Hacked to death in Jaffna on May 28, 2008.
Rashmi Mohamed: TV journalist killed in a suicide bomb attack during news coverage in Anuradhapura together with 27 others on October 6, 2008.
Imprisoned
Nadesapillai Vidyatharan: editor of Sudar Oli, a Tamil newspaper. Imprisoned February 2009.
J.S. Tissanaiyagam: columnist for English language paper The Sunday Times. Arrested by Terrorist Investigation Department on March 7, 2008.
N. Jasiharan: owner of E-Kwality Press on whose premises Sunday Times columnist/editor J.S. Tissainayagam was renting space. Arrested on March 6th, 2008 with his wife, one day before Tissainayagam was arrested.
V. Valarmathy: wife of Jasiharan; arrested with him on March 6th, 2008.
Attacked
Poddala Jayantha: freedom campaigner and government critic. Beaten severely on his way home from work, June 1, 2009.
J.C. Weliamuna: Prominent human rights lawyer and Executive Director of Transparency International Sri Lanka. Grenade attack on residence, September 27, 2008.
Tissa Ravindra Bandara: journalist for Sinhala paper Rivira. He and his family were attacked by plainclothes police in the town of Homagama on January 6, 2007.
Ajith Seneviratne: journalist for Sinhala publication Haraya. Assaulted in suburb of Nugegoda on January 9,2007.
Gnanasiri Kottigoda: journalist for BBC Sinhala Service. Assaulted in suburb of Nugegoda on January 9,2007.
K. P. Mohan: journalist for Tamil newspaper Thinakkural. Attacked in the town of Fort on January 28, 2007.
Victor Somaweera: journalist for newspaper Lankadeepa. Stabbed in town of Bingiriya on January 10, 2008.
U. S. A. Bandara: journalist for network Sirasa. Attacked while covering the bus bomb explosion in the town of Okkampitiya on January 16, 2008.
Lal Hemantha Mawalage: journalist for Sri Lankan Rupavahini TV corporation. Attacked in Athurugiriya on January 25, 2008.
Suhaib M. Kasim: journalist for Tamil newspaper Thinakaran. Attacked in Colombo on January 28, 2008.
Pankaja Sankalpa: journalist for Independent Television Network. Assaulted by a Buddhist monk in the city of Matara on February 28, 2008.
